Are Color Correcting Creams For Real?

These days there’s so much hype surrounding CC creams. And believe it, for the most part, it’s not an exaggeration. They are formulated with the distinctive power of targeting pesky discoloration, color correcting creams (yes, that’s what the “CC” stands for) offer all of the best things about BB creams — like multitasking as a moisturizer, primer and foundation — with the added bonus of evening out skin tone and fading any dark spots from hyperpigmentation.

But one thing CC creams are notoriously not so great at? Inclusivity. It isn’t rare to see brands enter the category with creams in fewer than five shade offerings, generally grouped in broad — and relatively offensive — classifications like light and light-medium. Turns out, most of that comes down to science.

“Most CC creams have high levels of zinc and titanium dioxide to make up their sunscreen, which in their raw state are pure white,” Karissa Bodnar, CEO of Thrive Causemetics, previously explained to Fashionista. “That’s what makes it almost impossible for brands to achieve the darker shades.”

But the good news is that there are brands out there, including Bodnar’s, that are actively working to address the problem by creating and expanding ranges for the product type. And to help narrow down the best ones across the spectrum, we tapped a handful of makeup experts to share their favorites.
